At age 11, he added the string bass to his list, after falling in love with the instrument at a local Bluegrass festival.Īs part of the young band Rambling Minors, Andrew recorded a CD produced by Keith Little (Dolly Parton Band, The Little Band), and appeared on National Public Radio’s California Report, as well as the California Bluegrass Association’s Father’s Day Bluegrass Festival. At the age of 9, Andrew became fascinated by the trombone, which he saw when his father was appearing in a production of The Music Man. As a small child, Andrew’s father Joe took him to many Bluegrass music festivals, where he would fall asleep in his tent listening to all-night jam sessions. At the age of 4, Andrew began his musical education on the fiddle. When not playing as Crying Uncle, they can be found performing with their Bluegrass Band, which includes Andrew Osborn on bass and John Gooding on guitar.Īndrew Armstrong Osborn, age 20, is an award-winning, bluegrass upright bass player, trombonist, and vocalist from San Rafael, California. In 2022, Miles received the prestigious Whippoorwill Arts Fellowship. The brothers, who are also National and State Champion fiddlers and pickers, were 2019 Freshgrass Festival finalists in the fiddle and mandolin contest categories. Each of them were nominated for the 2021 IBMA Instrumentalist Momentum Award. The Duo also performed at the Grand Ole Opr y in August 2019, as guests of Connie Smith. In 2019, Country Music Legend Marty Stuart invited the brothers to perform with his band at Ryman Auditorium. Miles and Teo have had the privilege of playing with many phenomenal musicians including Marty Stuart, Brittany Haas, Sean Watkins, John Reischman, Darol Anger and Mike Marshall. They have had the opportunity to play at venues, including Largo at the Coronet in Los Angeles, CA (as guests of Sean Watkins, of Nickel Creek and The Watkins Family Hour ), Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley, Whippoorwill Arts/Northwest Folklife, Greyfox Bluegrass Festival, and Ogden Music Festival in Utah. Having founded the band in 2016, the Duo continues to perform as Crying Uncle, and often invites guest artists to join them. Most recently, they released their newest album, The Thing of Dreams. In 2021, the bluegrass band came out with an EP of mostly self-written tunes, Till I Dance Again with You, inspired by a year of “isolating” during the pandemic. Monroe Bridge, which features guest artists, fiddler Chad Manning and mandolinist Sharon Gilchrist, was produced by David Grisman Bluegrass Experience banjoist Keith Little and mastered at Berkeley’s Opus Studios. And in 2020, they released their sophomore album, Monroe Bridge. The band released their eponymous album, Crying Uncle, in 2018. In 2018, the band was featured on a TEDTalk with Nashville-based singer/songwriter Phoebe Hunt. Internationally, the band played at Bluegrass in La Roche, France in 2022 and in 2019, they traveled throughout Finland on a 10-day tour, culminating at Kaustinen Folk Music Festival. The band has played at venues such as IBMA’s World of Bluegrass Festival, CBA’s Father's Day Bluegrass Festival, Strawberry Music Festival, SF’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, and Arizona’s Pickin’ in the Pines.
